Director Robert Rodriguez and actor John Malkovich have joined forces on a project that might take a while to see the light. It’s called 100 Years, the movie you’ll never see — unless you’re alive in 100 years.
A Movie for the Next Century
Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Machete) and veteran actor John Malkovich (Empire of the Sun, RED) worked together on a film titled 100 Years, which is already finished and stored away to be seen in 100 years. Yes, you read that correctly. Unless you’re alive a century from now, you’ll likely never see this movie. The idea came out of a promotional campaign for the cognac “Louis XIII,” a liquor that is aged for exactly one hundred years before it goes on sale. There are three teasers for the film, each one representing a different possibility for what the world might look like in a hundred years.
The Teasers
“There are several options for what the Earth will be like in a century,” Malkovich says. “One of them is that we live in a civilization with advanced and fascinating technology, another is that we live in a kind of post-apocalyptic world in the style of Chernobyl, and finally that ‘retro’ version of the future that was imagined in the science fiction movies of the 40s or 50s. All of them were great ideas for our movie.” The most interesting thing is that none of these teasers, starring John Malkovich and Shuya Chang, are part of the real film. All of this is part of the secret and illusion of 100 Years.
A Century of Anticipation
Meanwhile, the Louis XIII team has already sent movie tickets to 1,000 people, inviting their descendants to a screening of 100 Years exactly a century from now. By that time, they’ll need to get their hands on an old projector, since the film will be preserved in its original format. Of course, we can’t rule out the possibility that this movie might be a fake, considering that in a hundred years none of us will be around to verify it (if we even remember!), and that all of this is merely a grand advertising campaign for the cognac “Louis XIII.” Directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by John Malkovich, 100 Years has a release date set for November 18, 2115.
