There's no way around it: the popular FPS from id Software keeps surprising us with every new version that hits the street (or the web, anyway). And this time an independent developer presents us with 1337d00m, a DOOM in ASCII code that breaks your eyes.
We've been covering the strangest and funniest DOOM mods for a while now (the strangest and funniest DOOM mods, as well as the most bizarre devices capable of running it). And this time Croatian developer Dario Zubovic has created his own Unity remake of id Software's classic FPS. The result? 1337d00m, a DOOM in ASCII code that breaks your eyes.
The graphics are just letters, numbers, and colored symbols, something like the green text cascades in The Matrix. There's even a monochrome mode so you can enjoy a couple of games while dealing heavy ammo to the demons.

According to Zubovic, the appeal of 1337d00m lies in its difficulty; the higher the difficulty, the larger each individual character. You can compare starting from the easiest mode, which keeps them small enough to distinguish the environment and enemies, while in the hardest mode it becomes hard to discern those elements. If you want a true challenge, just set the game to monochrome mode. Then you'll realize it will take several attempts to get through just a few areas.
Soundtrack and availability
A minor but interesting detail is that the soundtrack is handled by Australian band Turtle Skull, where you'll hear tracks from their recent album. So you know, if you want to enjoy a true classic from the past from a new perspective, trying to beat it in monochrome mode accompanied by psychedelic rock playing in the background while you blast shotgun shells left and right at any demon that crosses your path, this version of DOOM is for you.
