From SimCity to Micropolis

Originally released in 1989 for the Macintosh and later ported to various personal computers and consoles, SimCity introduced us to city-building simulation. The game was a huge success and spawned several sequels over the years, though not all had the same impact as the original (just remember the controversial SimCity in 2013). On January 10, 2008, the source code of SimCity was released under the GPL 3 license under the name Micropolis, which interestingly was the name Maxis had originally used when starting development two decades earlier.

Play 3D City for Free

Thanks to the release of the code, in 2013 a developer managed to adapt Micropolis to JavaScript and HTML5, hosting the game on GitHub under the name 'micropolisJS'. Using that game as a base, another developer created 3D City, a free version of SimCity available to play in your browser. When you enter the game, you can configure the map type and difficulty. 3D City is still under development, most noticeably lacking audio. The options let you save and load your game, although it might take a moment to respond.

When it comes to gameplay, 3D City maintains the characteristic playability of the classic SimCity, allowing you to build your own city to your liking. All the necessary elements are at hand when constructing different types of buildings, setting up an electrical power network, adding transportation systems, and many other actions to improve the city.
