A trick, a deception, the eyes-brain system inventing things. Now, how about a whole short film of optical illusions? Filmmaker Vier Nev published last week on Vimeo his project "A Mind Sang", which explores concepts like transformation, rebirth, and the weakness of our perception.
Do you want optical illusions? I guarantee you've come to the right place: boxes that don't move, images that seem different, balls and skulls that are all the same color, black-and-white photos that gain color out of nowhere, the Ames window, curves and diagonals, and the 12 black dots. Eyes and brains deceived, betrayed. And at the same time, there's nothing wrong with them. Our systems have limits, restrictions. And when information is insufficient, the brain doesn't hesitate to fill in, add extras.
Filmmaker Vier Nev decided to take advantage of all that and more in creating his works (you can access his Instagram profile by clicking here), but the most impressive is "A Mind Sang", a short film that barely exceeds six minutes. Nev explains that everything began with twenty drawings based on different cultural representations of birth and identity. Couples (many of them defined as queer by Nev), mothers and cats are recurring elements in his works, and he wondered if he could combine the whole package into a film, the stories of those characters through shapes and shadows. One picture, two images.
And the final result is excellent. Each time you recognize something, the picture changes and shows a different shape. 2D and 3D, nature, bodies, animals. Adults and babies. Pareidolia taken to the max. "A Mind Sang" has a marked experimental profile, but at the same time we can't deny a certain familiarity.
