But classic voicemail, the one that revolutionized the '90s, already feels “nostalgic.” That brings us to After the Beep, a website with a phone number where you can record a public, anonymous voicemail. No accounts, no profiles.
If there's one thing we can say about the early generations of voicemail, it's that they didn't offer much security. Many enthusiasts changed their greeting using the default password (0000 in most cases), but there were also high-profile scandals involving famous people. Today, the icon of a pending voicemail message does nothing but cause frustration. Some users don't even know the correct command to access its content, and they wait for it to disappear on its own. All you have to do is call 1 (442) 667-2337, or 1-HI-BOOP-BEEP. If I'm reading the area codes right, I think the phone number belongs to California. At the time of writing, the site has 163 messages. The dates suggest that After the Beep went into operation last year (April-May 2023), but it seems to have gone viral in the last few hours, with dozens of new messages.
The interface reminds us of old Windows versions (95? 3.11?), and the sound is quite convincing in all cases. One of the messages was recorded from Mexico, which confirms that the After the Beep number accepts international calls. Its creator, Blaine Murphy, explains that the message may take a while to appear (all recordings are manually moderated, prioritizing English), and that the hosting for the voicemail is VoIP.ms.
