AM5 has firmly established itself in the market, but the story is not over for its predecessor AM4. If we go by a new entry in the client list of the Eurasian Economic Union, AMD is about to launch the Ryzen 5 5500X3D processor. With a 4 GHz single-thread turbo and 96 MB of L3 cache, this chip is shaping up as a solid option for gamers who want to boost performance without burning through their budget.
Looking closely at the latest reviews, AMD's new 9000 series is not having the expected impact. In fact, some experts recommend avoiding the series altogether and looking for deals on 7000 X3D chips, or waiting for Zen 5 to incorporate that extended L3 cache.
However, there is also movement in the AM4 space. The official cycle for that socket ended in September 2022 with the debut of AM5, but it hasn't gone anywhere. There is still plenty of motherboard availability, and Microcenter (a major chain in the United States) even distributed the Ryzen 5 5600X3D exclusively in its territory. What comes next? All arrows point to a new Ryzen 5 5500X3D.
Ryzen 5 5500X3D: Will there be X3D for under $200?
Where does this come from exactly? The first rumors emerged in November 2023, and now a new entry in the Eurasian Economic Union list adds to the picture. This doesn't necessarily mean the processor's launch has been 100% confirmed, but we don't have major reasons to believe it's false.
As for its specifications, the November information remains the most relevant: 6C/12T, base frequency of 3.0 GHz, and 4.0 GHz in turbo mode. Those numbers are very similar to the 5700X3D (3.0/4.1), but it leaves two cores and four threads behind. The total L3 cache is exactly the same, at 96 MB.
It's most likely that AMD decided to reuse silicon, taking advantage of 5600X3D chips that didn't pass validation. But none of this will make sense if the 5500X3D doesn't come with a good price. If we consider that the Ryzen 7 5700X3D is already available for $205 on Amazon, the 5500X3D must break the $200 floor, with a good margin.
