Ink cartridges. Coffee capsules. Planned obsolescence. Manufacturers use all kinds of tricks to keep users inside their sandboxes, even if that means violating basic rights. In the United States, farmers have stepped into the ring to fight against John Deere and its blocking of third-party repairs on tractors. The legal path is slow, and the next harvest cannot wait, so farmers have turned to hacking, with the help of Ukrainian software.
Across the pond, there is a legal battle in progress. The reason for that battle borders on the absurd, but it is a perfect representation of what happens with technology these days. I mean that you acquire a product, and the manufacturer suggests that you are not the owner. From their point of view, what your money buys is simply a license to use, which also carries a package of special restrictions. We have seen these hindrances everywhere. Different formats, the same essence. In the name of intellectual property and trade secrets, manufacturers repeat the classic mantra "You Can't Do That", and plan to take it to ridiculous extremes. It is in the United States where we find one of the most striking examples: farmers cannot even repair their own tractors.
John Deere is a name closely associated with agriculture. Entire generations of farmers have used their products, and no one denies that they are good quality. But vehicles eventually break down, and John Deere decided that should control that aspect too. If repairs are not carried out with official tools and by authorized employees, the tractor stops working. While US law explores the right to repair, farmers and local mechanics have only one option: hack the tractors. The main resources for this are cracked applications from countries like Ukraine and Poland. The software is not cheap, and forum access (necessary in most cases) requires an additional sum, but faced with John Deere's madness, farmers prefer to pay and regain control of their vehicles.
As expected, John Deere seems to be a broken record: "Unqualified personnel", "risk to equipment and the user", "intellectual property", and more. What is the farmers' response? One hack at a time. Alternative parts, experience-based optimizations, and even a tractor that uses methane extracted from pig excrement. What millions of users experience day after day with smartphones and computers (lack of diagrams, proprietary tools, etc.) has now arrived in the field, to its workers, and by extension, to food. Fortunately, these new "farmer hackers" are up to the challenge.
