SecurityWeek reported on October 19, 2026, that Anthropic had acquired Opaque Systems. In its October 13 announcement, Opaque said its team was joining Anthropic and Opaque Systems was winding down.
The AI security work Opaque developed
Opaque’s work grew out of research at UC Berkeley’s RISELab. The company describes its confidential-computing technology as using hardware-enforced protections for sensitive data while AI workloads process it.
Opaque also describes work on verifiable AI. It uses cryptographic evidence to identify what ran, where it ran, and under which policies. These are Opaque’s descriptions of its work.
Open-source projects Opaque says remain available
Opaque says its open-source work continues at AgenTrust. In its project update, the company says these projects remain open and available under their existing licenses:
- Weight Custody Manifest
- Agent Manifest
- Confidential MCP
- Confidential A2A
- TRACE
Opaque’s statement covers their availability under existing licenses, without promising ongoing maintenance.
