On October 2, 2026, Apple said it plans additional controls requiring a very explicit user action before an app receives Full Disk Access on Mac. Apple connected the plan to the risks of broad access as AI agents become more capable, but the permission controls concern apps generally.

What Full Disk Access means on a Mac

Full Disk Access can give an app broad access to data on a Mac when the user grants permission. Cloud-backup services are one example of an app category that may need broad access. On iPhone and iPad, apps are sandboxed by default: each app is separated from other apps’ data.

The Muse allegation and Meta’s response

Jason Aten alleged that Meta’s Muse read private Messages content on his Mac. Aten said he had not enabled Full Disk Access. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said Muse needs both Full Disk Access and the Messages connector enabled to read Messages content, and that access can be revoked.
