Whole Room Audio is Apple’s room-wide mode for four HomePods, while Surround Sound is a separate home-theater option. A software-code inspection by pdfu, reported by MacRumors on October 20, describes Whole Room Audio routing stereo channels diagonally across the speakers. Apple requires Apple TV 4K (4th generation), the latest operating system software and four supported HomePod speakers arranged in matching front and rear pairs.
How Whole Room Audio routes stereo
Apple describes Whole Room Audio as spreading sound evenly across four HomePod speakers. In the software-code inspection by pdfu, the front-left and rear-right speakers share the left stereo channel; the front-right and rear-left speakers share the right channel. That distributes a left-and-right stereo mix across the room, with each channel reaching speakers at opposite corners.
The report describes no separate audio controls for Whole Room Audio. Its diagonal channel map is a reported software-inspection finding, not a listening-test result.
Surround Sound has separate reported controls
The same inspection describes Spatialize Stereo and a rear-speaker Surround Level control for Surround Sound. Spatialize Stereo defaults to On for both Video and Music. When it is off, regular stereo plays through the front pair and the rear pair receives an empty mix.
Surround Level adjusts the rear pair from −8 dB to +8 dB in 0.5 dB steps. Its reported default is Normal (0 dB). These settings distinguish the two modes: Whole Room Audio distributes stereo across the room, while Surround Sound offers controls for stereo spatialization and rear-speaker level.
Check the Apple TV and HomePod requirements
Apple specifies Apple TV 4K (4th generation) with the latest operating system software and four speakers that are either HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini 2. The front speakers must match each other, and so must the rear speakers. The front and rear pairs can use different supported models, such as HomePod (2nd generation) in front and HomePod mini 2 in the rear.
Apple scheduled HomePod mini 2 availability to begin October 30, 2026, and Apple TV 4K (4th generation) availability to begin November 13, 2026. For a broader look at the two supported speaker models, see our HomePod mini 2 and HomePod comparison.
What Apple says calibration does
Apple says the four speakers recognize their positions in the room, allowing the system to calibrate audio timing and levels automatically. The setup therefore combines a specific speaker layout with Apple’s automatic position recognition and calibration.
