Apple began rolling out Siri AI in the United States on September 14, 2026, but this is not a finished, universally available assistant. The Apple Intelligence-powered redesign is an English beta across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. Eligible users can opt in from Siri settings, and Apple may place the account on a waitlist before access arrives.

Siri AI is designed to move beyond isolated voice commands. It can hold follow-up conversations, use supported information from Messages, Mail, Calendar, Notes, Reminders and Photos, and answer questions about content currently displayed on screen.

Apple also gives it systemwide app actions. Depending on the supported app and task, Siri AI can draft an email, create an event, edit or share a photo, send a message, work with Reminders and use Visual Intelligence. A dedicated Siri app can keep conversation history synchronized across supported Apple devices through iCloud.

What the redesigned Siri can actually do

The useful distinction is between personal context and general chatbot conversation. Siri AI is built to connect a request with information already available in supported Apple apps—for example, finding details in messages or notes and then helping carry out an action elsewhere in the system.

Its onscreen awareness extends that relationship to the content on display. Apple says Siri AI can answer questions about what is on screen and act on it. Visual Intelligence is available through the Camera on iPhone, screenshots on iPad, keyboard shortcuts on Mac and visual interaction on Apple Vision Pro.

Apple combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute when a larger model is needed. Apple says data handled by Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple. Server-side Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, may also be subject to daily limits that vary with the feature, request complexity, demand and policy.

The compatibility trap: installing the update is not enough

Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device. Apple lists these compatible categories:

  • iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later, and iPhone Air.
  • iPad: iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPads with the M1 chip or later.
  • Mac: Macs with Apple silicon.
  • Headset: Apple Vision Pro.
  • Apple Watch: supported models paired with an eligible iPhone.

The most advanced AFM Core Advanced model, including expressive voices, requires newer hardware in some cases. Apple lists iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, plus iPad models with M4 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory, and Mac models with M3 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory.

In other words, an iPhone or iPad that can install the latest operating system is not automatically eligible for every Apple Intelligence feature. The device, language and region all matter.

Why the EU rollout is different

Apple says Siri AI is initially unavailable on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS in the European Union. macOS and visionOS have separate eligibility rules, so the iPhone and iPad restriction does not apply automatically to every Apple platform.

The United States is among the markets where eligible users can try the English beta through Siri settings. Apple’s support guidance also notes that the feature is not currently available when the Apple Account region is mainland China.

Siri’s useful frontier—and its current ceiling

Siri AI’s strength is its close connection to Apple’s operating systems, apps and supported personal context. Its ceiling is different from that of newer agentic assistants designed to operate across websites and external accounts.

Siri AI can use broad world knowledge for answers, but it does not yet browse websites on a user’s behalf or complete complex online workflows such as booking and rebooking travel. It is better understood as a deeply integrated system assistant than as an autonomous web operator.

How to try Siri AI in the United States

Apple Support shows how to opt into Siri AI (Beta), adjust its voice and use the updated Siri app.

On a compatible device:

  1. Update to a supported version 27 operating system.
  2. Open Settings and choose Siri.
  3. Select Try Siri AI (Beta).
  4. Complete the voice-enrollment and privacy steps.
  5. If Apple places the account on a waitlist, wait for Siri AI to download and become available.
