The Apple II needs no introduction. Sixteen years in production, more than five million units sold (across its entire family), an impressive software library... this computer defended Apple in its darkest moments, and entire generations remember it with great fondness. Now, getting the original hardware is a slow and very expensive process, but if you only want to access the classic environment and its main programs, it is enough to use the Apple II emulator AppleWin.
There are many classic computers, and each region has had its favorites (although there were isolated cases where they had to build them from scratch), but on the other side of the pond, the Apple II holds a privileged position, even 42 years after its launch. You only need to browse YouTube to learn everything about this system, from programming and general compatibility to repairs and modifications.
The alternative to all that... is an emulator. With more than four decades on its shoulders, it's not too complicated to emulate the Apple II. In fact, some projects already include the most advanced versions of the computer, and high-profile mods. One of them is AppleWin.

If you don't remember or have never learned the basic Apple II commands, don't worry. Although there are combinations that lead to a total crash of the emulator, what matters most to us is its compatibility with existing software. Our best option is to visit the 4 a.m. Collection on the Internet Archive, download the .dsk files of several titles, and give it a try.
As you can see in the images, Carmen Sandiego and Ultima 1 worked without too many issues (although Ultima 1 asks to create a character disk). My biggest difficulty came with sound. AppleWin comes with all its audio options disabled, and every time I tried to enable the Mockingboards, the emulation fell apart. A temporary solution was to change the emulation mode from “Enhanced Apple //e” to standard Apple //e.
In short, much to learn and explore, mistakes to make, and hundreds of programs waiting for you on the Web. Perhaps AppleWin is not the best Apple II emulator available, but the fact that it reduces its main functions to a couple of clicks makes it very friendly.
