Many companies have predicted the end of the keyboard, but despite the extraordinary advances in mobile devices, there is still a need for data entry with greater precision than what touchscreens allow. Enter NEC, which is working on the ARmKeypad, a wearable device capable of projecting an augmented reality keyboard onto your forearm.
Why a Physical Keyboard Still Matters
The latest hybrid systems have emphasized the quality of their keyboards, and for good reason. When you're lounging in bed and want to listen to music or watch videos, a touchscreen provides ideal control for consumption. But when you're working at a computer, we all want a full keyboard as an ally, ready to offer multiple shortcuts and a familiar layout. The problem is that in certain situations, a physical keyboard simply isn't an option.
As an alternative, NEC proposes using augmented reality combined with wearable technology. The project, called ARmKeypad, consists of two parts: a smartwatch and a special pair of glasses. The glasses display the keyboard on your forearm and detect both the movement of your fingers and the keys you press. The smartwatch, meanwhile, can change the keyboard layout or track how fast you type. ARmKeypad aims not only to replace traditional keyboards but also touchscreens. This way, a worker keeps their hands relatively free, and to send commands, they just need to press a couple of augmented keys on their arm.
A Solution for Noisy or Silent Environments
NEC also claims this solution is superior to voice recognition devices, as it can be used in very noisy environments or in places that require absolute silence. Warehouse managers, maintenance services, and medical personnel are some of the examples NEC mentions when considering ARmKeypad applications. The system still looks quite crude, but they hope to bring it to market sometime next year. No details on pricing have been announced.
