Since 2015, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has been inviting scientists and artists from around the world to one of the most astonishing art contests: agar art... with bacteria!
The rules are simple: all creations must use bacteria as paint and petri dishes as canvas. Thus, artists mix all kinds of microorganisms, using different techniques, to achieve their illustrations. True biological collages that surprise as much as they disgust (they are cultures of gross bacilli, after all!)
The call has been held since 2015 without interruption, and year after year the works become more beautiful. In this gallery we have selected the ones we liked the most from all years. If you want to see all entries, as well as participate in the selection of the best works of 2017, you just have to go to the ASM Facebook page and like your favorites.
