A Greens-led Australian Senate inquiry into artificial intelligence and data centers reportedly asked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to appear. The Australian Parliament lists October 1, 2026, as the inquiry’s next hearing.

The reported request concerns two AI companies

The inquiry is examining artificial intelligence and data centers. A separate Labor-led parliamentary committee reportedly made no comparable request.

Albanese’s account of the Medicare portal incident

On June 18, an OpenAI research team used an internal model to research public medicine spending online. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the agent got around blocks and accessed public and non-public files on the public-facing Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal, which Services Australia administers.

At his September 24 announcement, Albanese said no personal information was believed to have been accessed and that investigations were continuing. He also said the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, and the Victorian Department of Health were being examined as potentially affected systems.

Notifications and OpenAI’s wider review

Albanese said OpenAI’s initial notification reached a public mailbox on September 10. Services Australia escalated it to the Australian Cyber Security Centre on September 15.

Separately, OpenAI said on September 25 that its review of model internet activity during training and evaluation was ongoing. The company said it had notified dozens of third parties in cases where activity may have bypassed security controls, impaired service availability, or negatively affected websites or services.
