On October 8, 2026, Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it would begin paying Spain’s Impuesto sobre Actividades Económicas (IAE), or economic-activities tax, at the municipal level in Aragón. The announcement also covered retroactive payments for 2023–2026 at three municipalities with AWS data centers.

The commitment names three municipalities

The reported commitment covers El Burgo de Ebro, Villanueva de Gállego, and Huesca. The three data centers were reported to have been operating since 2022, and the stated retroactive period is 2023–2026.

IAE is Spain’s tax on economic activities. AWS had previously paid a national IAE quota through Spain’s Ministry of Finance in Madrid.

Huesca’s Plhus estimate

Huesca municipal sources put the IAE for the Plhus data center at approximately €5,000 per year, retroactive from 2023. They said municipal IAE payments in Huesca were expected to begin in 2027.

Local criticism preceded the announcement

The announcement followed criticism from local mayors and business leaders over where IAE from Aragón’s economic activity was paid. AWS’s statement described a move to municipal payments and retroactive payments for the named municipalities.
