Integrated graphics have improved a lot in recent years, but sooner or later, every laptop and mini PC user will look for (if not 'wish for') a bit more power in the form of an external graphics card. With that in mind, Ayaneo is about to launch its 'Starship Graphics', a dock with a spaceship design that includes a mobile AMD GPU, a wide range of ports, charging support, and a manual control to adjust the hardware's TDP.
Both the Steam Deck console and its direct competitors, as well as the latest generation of mini PCs, have shown that integrated graphics systems can provide a very positive experience, as long as we accept some adjustments (quality, effects, upscaling, frame generation, etc.).
However, manufacturers have not closed the door to the possibility of connecting external graphics cards. In fact, some enthusiasts are getting OCuLink PCI Express adapters to simplify the process, but today we came across a 'ready-to-use' product: Ayaneo's Starship Graphics dock. What's special about it? Well... it looks like it's from Battlestar Galactica.
Ayaneo Starship Graphics: A 'retrofuturistic' dock with AMD hardware
Beyond the broken English on its official page (some errors really stand out), Ayaneo explains that the dock belongs to its Remake concept, combining 'a tribute to space science fiction' and 'a salute to retrofuturism'. But what about the hardware? Ayaneo chose an AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT GPU, with a total of 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and a 128-bit bus. One of the most interesting aspects of the Starship Graphics is that the user can adjust its TDP with an RGB dial, alternating between 100W and 120W. Obviously, that increases cooling noise, but 20 extra watts can make a difference in certain games.
On the back we find two DisplayPort 2.0 ports, two HDMI 2.1, a USB-C, a USB-A, an Ethernet connector, and an OCuLink port. Ayaneo has indicated that the dock can negotiate USB4 and OCuLink links, switching from one to the other without hiccups. As if that weren't enough, it includes a MicroSD slot and an M.2-2280 slot to add an NVMe PCIe 3.0 drive, and charging support via USB4, with a limit of 100W.
Available in two colors ('Nebula Red' and 'Interstellar Gary', which made me laugh for ten minutes), the Ayaneo Starship Graphics Dock has already entered its pre-sale phase, with a price of $599. First deliveries are expected at the end of November.
