BattleBots

One year. That is the time that the MegaBot Mark II and the Suidobashi Heavy Industry Kuratas have to prepare for their fight, which has spread across the Web like a wall of fire. The fact of having presented the challenge and that it was accepted on the other side of the world pressed all our buttons. The safety of the pilots is essential… but we want hits, giant chainsaws, flamethrowers, swords, shields, and twisted steel indiscriminately. It will be hard to count how many times I'll watch Robot Jox and Pacific Rim between now and the day of the fight, though I imagine it will be many. It's logical to assume that many enthusiasts must have restarted their favorite mecha anime to get in the mood. And as if that were not enough, television also seeks to satisfy our thirst for robotic chaos, allowing the return from the darkness of a very special project.

A Brief History of Robot Combat on TV

At the beginning of the century, there were two shows dedicated to turning robot combat into a high-performance sport: Robot Wars (United Kingdom) and BattleBots (United States). Robot Wars lasted seven seasons, accumulating more than 150 episodes across nine seasons, aired between 1998 and 2004 on the BBC. With a more compact format, BattleBots had five seasons in two years, totaling 67 episodes (several split into two parts) between 2000 and 2002, courtesy of Comedy Central. The final broadcast of BattleBots in December of its last year put the series into a deep sleep, uninterrupted for more than a decade. Many aspects have improved since then, including the technology available for the robots and the overall quality of the broadcast. For these reasons, the return of BattleBots with its sixth season manifests at the exact right moment.

The fans of the show decided not to waste time: They took the fights from the first three episodes, edited them and uploaded them to YouTube, setting aside all the interviews and replays, one of the weakest points in the format. The problem is that the show is now under ABC's control, and the idea of putting BattleBots clips online is not at all pleasing (they already managed to knock out the summary of the first episode). That said, take advantage to watch these videos before ABC's scythe cuts them off at the root. And if you have any doubt, remember: Robot fight!
