A flip-style foldable is the compact choice; a book-style phone gives you a larger inner screen for multitasking. Pick based on whether you value an easier-to-carry shape or more room to work and watch, then weigh handling, cameras and care.

Choose a shape for your routine

A flip, also called a clamshell, folds into a compact shape. A book-style foldable opens into a larger screen. WIRED describes flip models as the more compact option and book-style models as better suited to a larger-screen workspace.

Screen space, handling and software

SoMuchTech compares the iPhone Duo, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Xiaomi 18 Fold, OPPO Find N6 and HONOR Magic V6 across design, software, cameras, battery, durability, price and availability.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 illustrates the book-style format: WIRED lists a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, and says it can show three apps side by side in split screen. Choose that layout if you expect to read, message and keep another app open at once. If you mainly want a phone that folds down small, a flip design better matches that priority.

The larger Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra makes a different trade-off. WIRED lists its inner screen at 8 inches, compared with 7.6 inches on the Fold8, and its cover display at 6.5 inches, compared with 5.5 inches. Its listed camera hardware includes a 200-megapixel main camera and a 10-megapixel 3× telephoto camera. WIRED says the smaller Fold8 is easier to handle.

Software fit matters as well. One iPhone Duo owner, u/NumberWilling4285, reported black bars in some third-party apps and intermittent touch unresponsiveness during first-day use. If you rely on a foldable’s inner display for particular apps, check how those apps fit the larger screen before making a choice.

US guide prices for Galaxy Z Fold8 and alternatives

WIRED’s October 25, 2026 guide names the Galaxy Z Fold8 its best folding phone, the Motorola Razr Ultra (2026) its best flip, and the Motorola Razr (2026) its budget pick. These are the guide’s editorial choices, with these listed US prices:

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: $1,900. WIRED also displays $1,700 offers at Amazon and Best Buy, marked 11% off.
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: $2,100, a $200 difference from the Fold8’s listed price.
  • Motorola Razr Ultra (2026): $1,500.
  • Motorola Razr (2026): $800.

The Fold8 is the book-style option in this group; the two Razr models are flips. The Fold8 Ultra’s larger screens and listed camera hardware may matter if those are priorities, while WIRED describes the smaller Fold8 as easier to handle. Treat the amounts as prices shown in the October guide, not guaranteed checkout prices.

Protect the inner screen

A hinge fold-count figure is not a promise of drop resistance. WIRED warns that advertised tests of roughly 200,000 or 500,000 folds do not prevent damage from a drop. It also cautions that removing a foldable’s built-in inner-screen protector can damage the display.
