In another installment of "Strange Rumors to Start the Week", one of the most intriguing involves Bethesda. Just after confirming that the new Doom will get its own virtual reality treatment, a small leak from retailer Target has surfaced: a listing on their website called "Bethesda: Game of Thrones". The number one developer of open-world RPGs exploring a world like Westeros… it certainly gets your attention.
The Long Wait
The seventh season of Game of Thrones has come to an end. Fans went wild over the finale, and now they must endure the long wait, the famous "hiatus" that may last until July or August 2018. But even with the main series concluded, the Game of Thrones universe will continue in various ways. Technically, George R. R. Martin still owes two books from the original saga, and HBO seems likely to launch a spin-off. What about video games, though? Game of Thrones has given us a universe too rich and wide not to explore thoroughly. The first games weren't very well received, and Bigpoint and Artplant are supposedly working on an MMO with HBO's collaboration, so why do all the rumors point in Bethesda's direction?
What's Bethesda Up To?
The only reference we have is a listing on Target's portal with the phrase "Bethesda: Game of Thrones". The listing hasn't been taken down yet, suggesting something is imminent. In a recent interview, Todd Howard confirmed that the company is developing at least three games. Skyrim and Fallout 4 will get special virtual reality versions, there will also be a Skyrim edition for the Nintendo Switch, Doom VFR was recently announced, and we'll probably see another mobile game. The rumor mill says there are two RPGs in addition to the games we just mentioned, and one of them would be the Game of Thrones one. As for the remaining RPG, many fans insist it's something called "Starfield".
The Big Questions
If Bethesda takes on the mission of developing a massive RPG based on the Game of Thrones universe, I'm convinced their fans have every reason to celebrate, but that possibility casts a shadow of doubt over the rest of the franchises. What will happen to Fallout 5 or The Elder Scrolls VI? What will be the fate of Doom with id Software at the helm, and the highly appreciated Dishonored series from Arkane Studios? Many questions, and Bethesda is not talking...
