The specs of the latest ultracompact cameras to come through here are truly notable. For an average of 1,000 euros, any photography enthusiast can access very high quality images and video without falling into the restrictions of a smartphone, or the demands of a DSLR (which is not a bad thing). However, it's time to explore the entry space, and there we find the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II, which for less than 400 euros delivers a 20-megapixel sensor, 1080p60 video, touch support, and an 8 FPS burst.
If you're taking your first steps in the world of photography, you should know that many manufacturers have made a considerable effort to optimize the price and specs of their cameras. A few years ago, imagining a DSLR for less than 300 euros was the product of a feverish delusion, but there's the Canon EOS 4000D, one of the best-sellers on Amazon Spain. Of course, professional photographers need more than what those models can offer, or they simply aren't willing to accept their technical compromises, although that doesn't mean they're unsuitable for us. This also applies to ultracompact cameras, which are more complete and robust than the point-and-shoots of yesteryear. A good example is the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II, which at first glance doesn't convey much, but that feeling disappears once you start shooting with it.
Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II: In the Right Dose
Originally announced in January 2017, the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II brings a 20.1-effective-megapixel CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 7 image processor. Its ISO sensitivity ranges from 125 to 12,800 without Boost modes, and the shutter speed goes from 1/2000 to 30 seconds. Its LCD screen is three inches, with a definition of 1.04 million pixels. It has touch support but is not articulating, and at the same time serves as a viewfinder, which makes sense given the size of the body. In fact, most of the operation goes through the screen. The physical controls haven't gone anywhere (more details below), but if you come from a smartphone, the transition will be a breeze.
Canon managed to correct several of the limitations that affected the previous G9 X model. The burst performance fell apart in RAW mode, but with the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II you can shoot at 8 FPS with a buffer of 38 frames in JPEG, or 21 in RAW. Now, if you prefer continuous autofocus mode, the burst drops to 5 FPS on average, which isn't bad at all in an ultracompact at this price. Still, it's not what you'd call a sports or extreme action camera. The lens has a reach of 84mm (equiv.), and it's not very comfortable for football matches or similar practices, but things change in social settings, travel, and interiors. The autofocus works better than we expected, with a total of 31 points and several modes available, including face detection and tracking. The rest is a matter of assigning priorities by touching the screen.
The interface of the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II has been reduced to its minimum expression, similar to what we've seen in the Sony DSC-RX100 V. On the back there are only four buttons, while the top area is dominated by the mode dial. Following the manufacturer's classic style, the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II features Full Auto, Hybrid mode, Programmable Auto P, Shutter Priority Tv, Aperture Priority Av, Manual M, a customizable shortcut under the letter C, scene menu SCN, and video mode. The format of its online manual isn't the most convenient in the world, but any doubts you have will be resolved there. There's nothing too intimidating about the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II, and I'm convinced you'll master it in a few minutes.
If you expect to find 4K video in the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II, you'll end up disappointed. That mode is still a bit far from entry-level cameras, but in return you'll get a more than decent 1080p60 at 35 megabits per second, and its dynamic stabilization is very efficient even in the standard configuration. Technically, it's not necessary to acquire a high-speed card for this camera for video recording, but it's not something that hurts either (and the burst mode will thank you in its own way). Connectivity modes extend to Wi-Fi n with Bluetooth and NFC support, so there won't be any problems linking this camera with a smartphone. That said, the official app is still an exercise in patience, and remote control is more complete via Wi-Fi.

With a current price of 373 euros, the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II is one of the most accessible modern ultracompacts, and you'll probably start using it immediately, without additional accessories. However, adding some elements will help you protect the camera from the weather, extend battery life, and gain more stability.
Batteries and Power
Cameras like the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II have to pay the price of being ultracompact, and one of the most common points is battery performance. Under normal conditions, we can extract about 235 shots, or 355 with Eco mode activated, but the most effective way to neutralize this limitation is with a secondary battery. Tripods and Mounts
The Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II weighs 206 grams with battery and memory card already installed. It's so light and small that you'll surely carry it in an inner pocket without much trouble, but sometimes you'll need a point of support. Cleaning and Protection
I sincerely hope you don't have any problems with the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II if you decide to buy it, but despite my personal wishes, it's not a bad idea to do preventive maintenance. By that I mean getting a good cleaning kit like the one Gloxy offers, with a total of six items ready to combat dust and dirt. You also have a less 'aggressive' alternative, so to speak, in the Camgloss cleaning wipes. Each container brings 100 units, and they don't use alcohol.
Good design, a featherweight compared to other ultracompacts, a solid sensor accompanied by one of the most recent variants of the DIGIC processor, a surprising autofocus, and a consistent 1080p60 quality, all for less than 400 euros. At the time of its launch, the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II was a step below its rivals, but with the inevitable price adjustment, it became very attractive. Don't forget to consider it. Good luck!
