In an interview published October 8, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED Senior Publishing Producer Oleg Shatulo explained the rule for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered: saves can move from an existing version into Remastered, but not back to an older version. Supported Remastered platforms can share compatible saves through cross-progression.
| Transfer path | What happens | Requirement or consequence |
| Existing version → Remastered | The save can move into Remastered. | Transfer works in this direction. |
| Remastered → older version | The save cannot move back. | Compatibility is one-way. |
| One supported Remastered platform → another | Compatible saves can be shared. | Use cross-progression. |
| Original Nintendo Switch → Nintendo Switch 2 Remastered | The save does not transfer automatically from the console. | CD PROJEKT RED Account cross-progression and an uploaded save are required. |
| Save imported from another platform → achievements or trophies | Imported progress does not automatically unlock them. | Each platform tracks achievements and trophies separately. |

The Witcher 3 Remastered cross-save works in one direction
Cross-progression lets supported versions of Remastered share compatible saves, but it is not a two-way bridge between Remastered and older editions. You can bring an existing-version save forward; once it is saved in Remastered, it cannot be loaded by an older version.
That matters if you plan to return to an older version later: continuing the playthrough in Remastered means the save will not travel back. Shatulo’s explanation covers supported Remastered platforms, without setting out every platform pairing.
Moving an original Switch save to Switch 2
For a save from the original Nintendo Switch game, use CD PROJEKT RED Account cross-progression. Having the save on the Switch console alone does not transfer it to Nintendo Switch 2.
To move it:
- Update the game, open Load Game, and choose the cross-progression option.
- Link the game to a CD PROJEKT RED account and leave cross-progression enabled under Options → Gameplay.
- Create a save. Once cross-progression is enabled, the latest save of each type uploads automatically. A cloud icon beside a save indicates that it has uploaded.
- On the destination platform, link the same account and select the uploaded save from the load menu or My Rewards.
The same-account step is essential: the cloud save is the handoff between consoles, not the save stored locally on the original Switch.
Imported saves do not automatically carry achievements
A cross-platform save brings over game progress, but achievements and trophies do not automatically unlock on the destination platform. Each platform tracks them separately.
Shatulo distinguishes that from same-platform upgrades, where progress carries over. Nintendo Switch 2 is a separate product, so it is an exception to that same-platform carryover.
Xbox Play Anywhere and the Microsoft Store PC version
The Xbox Play Anywhere edition uses a standalone PC version from the Microsoft Store, separate from the editions on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net. Shatulo says it has feature parity with the other PC editions and supports progression between Xbox and that PC version.
