The Commodore 64 was, is and will be one of the best computers in the history of human computing. Period. It's no secret that it is one of the favorites of those of us at NeoTeo and my personal all-time favorite. It was my first computer and I have the best memories in front of that monochromatic screen full of wonder. I've written a lot about it, about my favorite game and even about developers who still make games for the computer, among other things. That is why my joy is huge right now, because the Internet Archive has just dumped more than 10,000 C64 programs into its archive, to experience online thanks to a modification of the VICE emulator.
In recent days we learned that Internet Archive had added more than 1000 new games to its arcade game collection. Great news, no doubt. How can I deny it? However, due to my personal history, I'm even happier to know that almost the entire Commodore 64 library can now be enjoyed online with just a few clicks. You just need to access Internet Archive and start exploring the immense archive of games, applications and demos.
The announcement was made by Jason Scott, a well-known archivist and creator of the site textfiles.com, on his official Twitter: "So, uh, hello everyone. Internet Archive is in the process of adding browser emulation support for the Commodore 64. Here's a collection of programs that currently work and have been tested to at least start correctly (10,500 at the time of writing, but growing)." Scott went on to explain, in another of his messages, that the emulation is based on version 3.2 of VICE, and refers to the work as "a triumph of engineering".
A triumph of engineering, no doubt, but here's a warning: arm yourself with patience. The C64 was a slow and intricate computer. Even with current emulation technology, using much of the available software can be frustrating if you don't know what you're doing. To help you in that task, you can enter the settings of this emulator with the F12 key. From the menu, you can configure many parameters, including the joystick configuration and its ports.
