And while today you can play most of those classic games via emulators, have you ever wondered what it would be like to play a remake of Frogger or Space Invaders today? Well, now you can, because a fan started a crusade to make free remakes of his favorite games at Crozza Games.
This site hosts a collection of remakes of games from the 80s that you can download individually or in a complete pack (with more than sixty games).
A Massive Collection of Free Remakes
The list of games includes classics like Asteroids, Snake, Space Invaders, Solitaire Collection, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Rick Dangerous II, Galaxian, Frogger, Missile Command, and Centipede, among many others.
The person behind Crozza Games started rebuilding his childhood by developing his favorite games of the era as a hobby, without profit, using one of the most popular tools for game creation: GameMaker from YoYo Games. All games are portable, and you can run them from any location on your computer. Most of them are between 1 and 5 MB in size; some will run in windowed mode by default, while others open directly in fullscreen mode.
Gameplay That Stays True to the Originals
Obviously, the most striking thing about these remakes is the graphics, but the gameplay in general is the same. In Pac-Man, for example, you still have to collect all the small dots in the level while avoiding being caught by the ghosts; another classic title is Galaxian, where moving left and right you have to shoot to defeat the waves of aliens with your spaceship. Most games are played with the keyboard, although some admit the option of using joysticks. All Crozza Games titles are available for free download on Windows.
