Computers are becoming increasingly compact, and this has led to some unconventional designs. While we've seen cubic systems in the past, this might be the first time that the shape itself represents the main function. Cuberox is a computer that uses Arch Linux ARM as its operating system, and its six faces are actually screens that can display the content of six different applications at the same time.
The miniaturization of computers has provided us with commercial alternatives like the Intel NUC, which can be installed in the most unusual places. Add to that projects like the Raspberry Pi, which despite its limitations is still a computer in the palm of your hand, and all the smartphones on the market with multiple cores and several gigabytes of RAM. Still, measuring these computers by their desktop potential isn't entirely fair. Many models can serve users better by adopting a more specific profile, whether as a server, a BitTorrent box, a media center, or an emulator station. Inside the Cube
The Cuberox is a polycarbonate cube with ten centimeters on each side, fully resistant to dust and liquids. Inside, we find a humble platform: a Freescale i.MX233 SoC at 454 MHz, 64 MB of RAM, 4 GB of storage (via microSD), WiFi and Bluetooth, a 7,800 mAh battery with a wireless charging base, a microphone, an accelerometer, and a gyroscope. These last two are key when combined with the six screens, each with a resolution of 16 by 16 pixels. The cube can run all kinds of applications, from weather and stock widgets to classic games like Tetris and Snake. The best part is that Cuberox uses all six screens at the same time, and they react to the user's movements, which also enables its use as a GPS.
Compatible applications can be downloaded from the official Cuberia store, and with the ARM version of Arch Linux at its core, a good level of support is expected.
Pricing and Availability
Right now, Cuberox is making its rounds on Kickstarter, seeking exactly $150,000. The original price during the campaign was $199, but all units have sold out, so you'll now have to pay $229 to get one. Shipping is worldwide, and if everything goes smoothly, the first deliveries are expected in November.
