The Original Game
Released in 1991 for Virtuality, a line of VR games found in American arcades in the early 90s, Dactyl Nightmare is essentially a two-player FPS set on a stage with multiple platforms. Players must face each other using weapons like axes and crossbows, while also watching out for a pterodactyl that flies around and dives at players to grab them and drop them off the stage.

If you're over 35, watching these videos probably brings on a touch of nostalgia, as they represent the first wave of VR advancement during the 90s. Before Oculus Rift, Virtuality was the reference for VR gaming, and Dactyl Nightmare was one of its earliest titles.
A Fan-Made Recreation for Oculus Rift
It was an unsuccessful attempt, though many hold fond memories of the device and their first forays into a virtual world. Last year, an indie developer named Breton recreated Dactyl Nightmare for Oculus Rift by simply watching a video of the game on YouTube.
Unfortunately, this adaptation is single-player only, so you can only explore the arena and watch the pterodactyl flying around. The novelty is that you can now shoot the flying reptile until it bursts, but beware—after eight successful shots, the creature will swoop down to grab you.
Playing Dactyl Nightmare Today
The original game was played on the 1000CS Cyberspace machines, which used a 3D joystick to control player movement. The Dactyl Nightmare adaptation for Oculus Rift supports the Razer Hydra motion controller, ideal for nostalgic players.
