Previously we talked about TinyWow, a pack of online utilities that works in our browser, and we highlighted several of its advantages for converting PDFs and images. However, it would be a mistake on our part not to explore the other side of the coin, and with that in mind we come to DevToys, a package of tools for developers compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11. Inside you'll find encoders, hash generators, image compressors, text converters, and several advanced options that will surely be very useful to you.
DevToys: Multiple developer tools in one package
Victorinox Swiss army knives need no introduction. Although they were already popular on their own, MacGyver made sure they achieved worldwide fame, and the multi-tool concept didn't take long to expand. Naturally, the computing world welcomed it with open arms, and today it's not hard to find projects that combine multiple resources under a single interface. Some do a better job than others, but today we're going to explore the case of DevToys, officially presented as "the Swiss army knife for developers".
What does DevToys offer? Its first category is converters. One of them converts JSON to YAML and vice versa, while the other works with numbers, for example, from decimal to hexadecimal and binary simultaneously. The encoders and decoders section includes options for HTML, URL, JWT, and the inexhaustible Base64, which will help you encode text strings quickly. The formats category has a single tool focused on JSON, and the generators are for hashes and UUIDs in versions 1 or 4.
Personally, I think the most interesting tools (at least from a general point of view) are the text inspection and conversion ones (which let us count words and letters, toggle uppercase and lowercase, or apply different formats), and the JPEG and PNG image compression ones, ideal if they need to be loaded on a webpage or sent as an attachment. DevToys may have a developer-oriented profile, but I think it's worth getting a copy even if we don't work with code. The package is free and open source, but for compatibility reasons I recommend installing it through the Microsoft Store.
