DiarioBitcoin reported that, effective October 11, 2026, GPT-6.1 Sol’s default context setting in Codex and ChatGPT Work increased from 272,000 to 500,000 tokens, and that long-context surcharges were removed for subscribers. The change adds 228,000 tokens to the reported default—about 83.8% above its earlier level. DiarioBitcoin’s report
The update follows OpenAI’s Codex and API announcements covered in NeoTeo’s earlier DevDay coverage.
The reported default and configurable ceiling
A context window is the amount of input and generated output a model can handle in a session. DiarioBitcoin put the reported configurable ceiling for GPT-6.1 Sol at 1,050,000 tokens: up to 922,000 input tokens and 128,000 output tokens. The 500,000-token figure is the reported default, not that ceiling.
More room lets a session accommodate more material, but a larger context by itself does not guarantee better task results.
Subscriber surcharges and API billing
The reported removal applies to long-context surcharges for subscribers. API usage remains a separate billing channel: DiarioBitcoin said standard API rates stayed at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. OpenAI’s original launch announcement lists those rates, along with $0.10 per million cached input tokens. OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Sol announcement
One Codex Desktop user’s configuration report
A Reddit user, u/Beginning_Leather858, reported that on Codex Desktop for Windows with GPT-6.1 Sol Max, setting model_context_window = 1000000 and restarting changed the display in an existing session from 182K/258K to 118K/828K. The user’s post describes that session’s display, not a general access limit.
