Matt Groening is stepping away from the yellow family for a while to focus on the misadventures of a young alcoholic princess and her two companions in a decadent medieval kingdom. Titled Disenchantment, this is the new animated Netflix series from the creator of The Simpsons.
A medieval fantasy for adults
Netflix has just announced that Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, will develop Disenchantment, an adult animated series set in a world of medieval fantasy. The protagonist is a young alcoholic princess named Bean, accompanied by her feverish elf companion Elfo and her personal demon Luci, who live in the decadent medieval kingdom known as Dreamland. According to Groening, Disenchantment is about life and death, love and sex, and how to laugh in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the wise men, wizards, and other idiots might say.
Cindy Holland, Netflix's vice president of original content, expressed her joy, stating, "Matt Groening's brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world, and we couldn't be happier to work with him on Disenchantment. The series will carry Groening's characteristic style and mordant wit, and we believe it's a perfect fit for our animation fans on Netflix."
Voice cast and production
While The Simpsons and Futurama have dynamic female characters, this is Groening's first series with a clear female lead. Let's hope Disenchantment doesn't end up on the same path as Korgoth of Barbaria or Son of Zorn, adult medieval series that ended up in oblivion. Produced by The Ululu Company, the animation is handled by Rough Draft Studios, which already worked with Groening on Futurama. The series will feature the voices of Abbi Jacobson as Bean, Nat Faxon as Elfo, and Eric Andre as Luci.
Created by Matt Groening, Disenchantment will consist of twenty episodes divided into two seasons. The first season will have ten episodes and is scheduled to premiere in 2018 on Netflix.
