The trained eye has probably noticed that the official announcement dates back to September, but in recent days we have detected an explosion of results based on the new Cinebench 2024 benchmark developed by Maxon. Direct heir to Cinebench R23 and its predecessors, the benchmark can now perform that same evaluation on graphics cards, and also extends support to ARM platforms such as Apple chips and Qualcomm Snapdragon.
Benchmarks only provide a reference to the end user, but they must possess some consistency or "quality", so to speak. Cinebench perfectly meets that condition, and has managed to become one of the most popular benchmarks to evaluate both the performance and thermal behavior of many processors.
What's next on the list? The new Cinebench 2024. The two most important changes are the inclusion of a benchmark for graphics cards and support for ARM processors. That means we can now run the same multi-threading tests on Apple processors, and on the new chips that Qualcomm is preparing for "Windows-on-ARM", like the Snapdragon X Elite.
How to Evaluate Your PC with Cinebench 2024
After downloading the correct version (Windows-x64, Windows-ARM64, or macOS), all we have to do is extract the contents of the zip into a temporary folder and run the executable. The first test takes a bit longer than normal due to the initial compilation process that happens in the background, but within a few seconds the threads will be saturated with activity.
Logically, the results of the different Cinebench editions cannot be compared with each other. Maxon explains on its official page that Cinebench 2024 is six times more demanding than Cinebench R23, and for that reason we see a lower score. I imagine Maxon will update the list of registered systems in the future, or it will be the users themselves who take care of documenting the new scores.
Maxon also shared the new minimum requirements for Cinebench 2024, but they don't seem to be set in stone (at least for now). The new benchmark asks for a minimum of 16 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of VRAM for the GPU test... although there are exceptions. Personally I can say that running the benchmark on a GeForce GTX 1660 Super went without problems, and that hardware has 6 GB of VRAM.
To finish, the preferences section allows us to limit the number of threads or set a specific duration, while the Advanced Benchmark option enables 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or no limit, something very useful if we need to evaluate cooling solutions. Link below!
