Early video game developers didn't have great resources to work with, but they managed to create styles, graphics, and fonts that were burned into our minds. If you have a project where you want to recreate that look or simply want to customize your desktops and interfaces, you should visit ZX Origins by Damien Guard, where you can download free fonts inspired by classic games and see fabulous demonstrations.

Loom, Maniac Mansion, Prince of Persia, Flashback, arcade games, C64, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, and many more systems. All with their own style, their graphics, and obviously, their typefaces. We've spent countless hours in front of the screen enjoying those adventures, studying and admiring their visual details.

Today, high-resolution graphics and text dominate everything, and the main processing techniques only adapt content to large screens or improve its definition. But what if we want a more retro look? Is it possible to download free fonts inspired by classic games and old platforms? The answer is yes, and ZX Origins by Damien Guard is an excellent starting point.

A tiny fraction of all there is to download

ZX Origins offers a total of 375 fonts spread across 208 typefaces, always adhering to the 8x8 pixel format. Some are based on games more directly, like Shinobi Extended, while others are inspired by developments such as the Space Shuttle. But the most impressive thing about ZX Origins is that Damien took the care to create a brief description for each font and prepare a simulation that shows it in action within various games.

Some fonts adapt very well to larger sizes

Depending on the characteristics, many of the fonts work better at their original size (you can choose 1x, 2x, and 3x in the simulation), however, others look fabulous even when enlarged. Then we find fonts that are almost impossible to read regardless of size (Eclipse and Jam have no mercy), and are recommended for very casual use.

To download free fonts from ZX Origins you don't need to create accounts or share an email address. Enter the font you like and download the zip file. Inside you'll find versions compatible with different systems, while on PCs, it's enough to right-click the .TTF and choose "Install".
