Dropbox. One of the most popular cloud storage services, with broad compatibility and some security incidents in its record. Little more can be added about the service these days, with one small detail: It doesn't offer a portable edition of its client. This is where DropboxPortableAHK comes in. It has been with us for several years, and its updates aren't very frequent, but if you want to take Dropbox everywhere, it's the first option on your list.
Online backups! If you don't want to fight with hard drive images or multiple removable drives to back up your personal data, a good shortcut is to appeal to the cloud and create online backups. Both Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive work well, but there is a true titan among them with 500 million users, and it's called Dropbox. While it's true that the free edition enables only 2 gigabytes, many people prefer it for its compatibility with other services, and for the (relative) good behavior of its client.
How to Take Dropbox Everywhere
The problem is... that there is no official portable edition. Loading a complete Dropbox environment on a USB stick should be simple, however, the installer doesn't enable that possibility, unless... we ask for help from an external program. That program is DropboxPortableAHK, a development from Nion Software that started in 2011. DropboxPortableAHK has managed to adapt to each new whim of Dropbox since then, and its latest beta build, dated September 20, 2019, works very well under the most recent edition of Dropbox.
The installation process is divided into nine steps, although most likely you won't need to touch anything: DropboxPortableAHK will take care of detecting the Internet connection and creating the Dropbox folder next to the executable. The program recommends performing all configuration from a local folder on the hard drive, and moving DropboxPortableAHK to the USB stick or external drive once finished. Step number 8 is the one that obtains the official Dropbox files, and therefore the longest. With a little patience we reach the end, where we enter our Dropbox credentials.
If everything goes well, every time we double-click on the DropboxPortableAHK executable, a portable and complete Dropbox instance will open, ready to use. The rest will depend on factors like Internet speed and the number of files to synchronize.
