Gearbox Software has just announced the return of Duke Nukem 3D to consoles and PC. To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the game, a new edition with many new features is on the way, titled Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour.
Released in 1996 for MS-DOS and later ported to consoles and mobile devices, Duke Nukem 3D put us in the middle of a fight against an alien invasion on Earth. Alongside Wolfenstein 3D, this title was responsible for popularizing FPS and received critical acclaim thanks to its gameplay, level design, and humor—a mix of pop-culture satire and Hollywood action heroes. It even featured several editions and expansions over the years that extended the game experience to the delight of fans.
Taking advantage of PAX West 2016 at the Washington State Convention Center, Gearbox Software announced in its panel that, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Duke Nukem 3D, the game will be released soon on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam. The name of this new edition is Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour and among the new features it includes a fifth episode and new lighting effects. Level design will be handled by two members of the original team, Allen Blum III and Richard “Levelord” Gray.
This fifth episode is none other than the aliens' world, where you will have to fight legions of enemies, including some new ones exclusive to this edition. It will also feature the participation of the original game's composer, Lee Jackson, and new voice recordings by Jon St. John (the original voice of Duke). Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour is being developed by Gearbox Software and will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows starting October 11, 2016.
