There are Windows users who are fanatical about wallpapers, but there are also those who keep the same default wallpaper that comes with Windows since installation. For those fanatics, we present RainWallpaper, a portable platform that adds dynamic capabilities to Windows wallpapers.
Dynamic wallpapers are nothing new in Windows. Microsoft itself implemented Dreamscene in Windows Vista, although the option didn't make it to newer versions. There are also third-party platforms like Desktop Movie, DreamRender, and an integrated option in the VLC video player. But RainWallpaper is a simple and functional option to achieve the same result.
Once you have downloaded and installed the program, you'll see the environment adds its own dynamic wallpaper engine to the operating system. By default, it installs four dynamic wallpapers that you can apply immediately. However, RainWallpaper, as you might expect, consumes a lot of system memory. About 150MB, depending on your computer. That means if you want animated wallpapers, you'll have to give up a percentage of your memory for the environment to work.
Downloading wallpapers in RainWallpaper
On the RainWallpaper profile on DeviantArt you'll find wallpapers of nature, popular games, space, technology, animals, web themes, and futuristic themes, among other categories. You can download them from the DeviantArt page or from within the interface: click on the platform icon and select “Select Wallpaper”. Then the environment will open and you'll need to choose the DeviantArt logo.
Also, clicking on the RainWallpaper icon in the system tray lets you select new wallpapers, pause, mute, delete wallpapers, and create a custom dynamic wallpaper.
Creating dynamic wallpapers
To create your own dynamic wallpapers, from the RainWallpaper menu select the option “Create Wallpaper”. Then the platform interface will open and you'll have to choose between Video (wmv, avi, mp4 and move) or Web (HTML). We'll work with the Video option.
Then you'll need to add a video file. You can do it from the top menu or simply drag and drop the file into the interface. At this point, clicking “Save” will add the dynamic wallpaper to your computer. Of course, you should have edited that video outside of the platform first.
RainWallpaper is a free program available for Windows operating systems and is ideal for beautifying your desktop with moving wallpapers. Remember, though, that you'll have to sacrifice a significant portion of your memory for it to work.
