Dzook: Create a portrait from a photograph

It's inevitable: if someone trains an artificial intelligence to draw portraits, we are there. Every project differs, results can present gigantic differences, and we are interested in both mistakes and hits. That's how we reached Dzook, a platform in beta. Upload a photo, and let its algorithm in the background create a "glamour version" portrait, or completely destroy it by applying a strange anime style. You choose!

If there is one thing we can say about platforms dedicated to creating portraits from photographs, it's that they appear on social media and automatically explode. The case of Portrait AI was impressive: with such high demand, its developers were forced to limit web access, and it still suffers from some errors. AI Gahaku also experienced multiple crashes at the time, but has managed to recover. And users want more.

Creating portraits with photographs in Dzook

That brings us to Dzook, currently in beta. Its developers explain that AILA, the artificial intelligence in charge of drawing, was trained with a database composed of "thousands" of artistic works. AILA has its own avatar and an Instagram account, but there aren't many technical details to speak of. Dzook's interface is very simple: upload a portrait, and click the button "Draw Me". Dzook recommends that the face be facing forward and unobstructed, and to avoid group photos.

As for the results, well... it's possible we'll get a chuckle or two. In our first test we used our benchmark Bill Gates, and we were satisfied to see no trouble drawing the glasses, however, his hair and the rest of his face tell another story. Big mouths and wide smiles, eyes wide open or barely visible and almost all the same color... it's not hard to recognize Dzook's limitations, but since it's a work in progress, we can't be too harsh.

As always in these cases, the recommendation for Dzook is to use photographs you already consider public, because its privacy policy confirms some data collection. Dzook is also available as a mobile app on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
