Earthquick is a web page that shows you the latest earthquakes that have shaken the planet. The platform uses blinking circles to show the exact location of the tremor on a map, and the magnitude is represented with a color scale.
Understanding the color scale
For example, an earthquake with a magnitude lower than 3 is shown in green, while tremors between 3 and 4 are marked in yellow. Movements between 4 and 5 appear in light red. The most powerful earthquakes are represented in dark red, on a scale of 5 to 6, and brown circles indicate magnitudes above 6. The magnitude is measured using the Richter seismic scale, which assigns a number (such as 2.0 to 6.9) to quantify the energy released by an earthquake.
When you visit the Earthquick website, you'll need to click on Web Map. Immediately, you'll see a world map with blinking circles. You can zoom in with your mouse wheel to get closer to the point.
Clicking on a circle opens a dialog box showing the magnitude and exact location of the earthquake. If the tremor occurred in the ocean, the tool shows you the number of kilometers separating the tremor from land. On the left panel, you'll find extended information about the earthquake displayed on the map.
Earthquick's map offers a very good tool to see the latest earthquakes on the planet, all under a simple and very visual web interface. You can also download the program, which is available for iOS mobile devices.
