For those of us trying to make our first steps in electronics, we need certain assistance that for the experienced electronic is just natural daily actions. If you need to calculate resistances, interpret their colors, estimate capacitor values in series and parallel, and more, you should check out this freeware called Electronics Assistant.
The idea was to build a small AM transmitter based on the extremely popular integrated circuit 555, but quickly I came to the conclusion that I couldn't reach the required resistance values, not even making several combinations.
Of course, there are many ways to calculate resistances in series and parallel, determine their values by color (something I still haven't fully learned), and know other values that will prevent your creation from ending up in the low orbit of Mars.
But I was convinced that there had to be a lightweight, easy-to-use, and fundamentally free software solution.
The Ideal Assistant for Basic Electronics
And that's how I found Electronics Assistant, a freeware developed by Simon Carter. Inside the program you can find functions to calculate parameters of different components. With this small program you can:
- Determine resistance values by color (with support for 4 and 5 band resistors)
- Get resistance values in series and parallel
- Calculate resistors for LEDs
- Convert capacitance units
- Get capacitor values in series and parallel
- Calculate the power dissipation of the resistor
- Among many other things.
Other highlights include the frequency calculator and the calculator for the 555 timer, which certainly helped me learn a bit more about this little demon. The latest version, 4.32 of Electronics Assistant, requires a download of just 1.8MB and the presence of version 2.0 of the .NET Framework, present in Windows.
The latest build fixes some problems found in previous versions, as well as several additions requested by the community. You can go to the official site and read the list of features.
