Emory University announced on October 19, 2026, that students, faculty, and staff with active emory.edu accounts can request Claude for Education. The university’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) reviews requests for eligibility and availability, then emails sign-in instructions if it approves one.

Who can request access, and what does it cost?

The service is for Emory students, faculty, and staff with active emory.edu accounts. Access is by request, and approval is not automatic.

Emory announced that standard licenses have no cost. Premium licenses cost $50 per license per month, are funded by individual departments, and provide higher usage allowances.

To apply, submit OIT’s AI Tools form. The Emory OIT Claude service page has the request instructions. OIT emails sign-in details after approval.

What does Emory’s service include?

OIT lists Claude, Projects, documents and files, web search and research, voice, and Learning Mode. In Learning Mode, a setting within Projects, Claude guides users with questions and reasoning rather than simply providing a finished answer.

Claude Cowork and Claude Code are outside the general offering and are being evaluated in limited pilots.

How does OIT handle conversations and sensitive data?

OIT says conversations under Emory’s agreement with Anthropic are not used to train models and are automatically deleted after 90 days. Emory administrators do not have access to private conversation content by default. OIT lists formal discovery, legal holds, academic integrity proceedings, and HR investigations as exceptions. The administrative audit log records system changes, not conversation content or titles.

Emory prohibits entering protected health information (PHI), controlled unclassified information (CUI), non-public student education records restricted by FERPA, passwords, credentials, keys, or tokens. The university also cautions against entering identifiable student information or other restricted data. OIT says the service has no special safeguards for sensitive information.

If you already use Claude with an Emory email

Emory instructs existing Claude subscribers who use an Emory email address to keep signing in through email verification. They should wait for OIT to contact them about migration before using Emory single sign-on (SSO).
