Enable Dark Mode on the WhatsApp Desktop Client

Dark mode is one of the trends on mobile devices, and WhatsApp is a step behind in this concept, still lacking it in both its mobile version and its desktop client. But there is a way, a simple method to get dark mode on the WhatsApp client for Windows.

There is an open-source (executable) program called “whatsapp-dark-mode” that adds a dark mode to the WhatsApp desktop client. But before we start explaining how it works, we want to tell you that the theme works with desktop clients downloaded from the official WhatsApp page. It will not work with the WhatsApp from the Windows Store.

Get Dark Mode on the WhatsApp Desktop Client

After installing the desktop client and running it on your computer, you'll need to go to the GitHub page of whatsapp-dark-mode and download the dark theme. In the ZIP file of the theme, you'll find the executable.

The tool will open a CMD window and make a backup of the current client before injecting the style files into it, automatically replacing the existing ones. This process will take a few minutes.

A green message will appear at the bottom of the command window to let you know the installation is complete. Now you can close the window and check that dark mode works correctly on the WhatsApp desktop client.

How to Remove Dark Mode?

If you need to remove dark mode, just run the whatsapp-dark-mode executable again. This time the command window will show you a message indicating that a backup is available. Select it and the tool will restore the default values of the desktop client and remove the dark mode.
