A Historic First
Despite being one of the largest entertainment media on the planet, it's rare to see video games receive the mainstream recognition they deserve. Now, that seems to be changing, as for the first time ever, a game's trailer has been nominated for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar. The promotional video in question is for this year's intriguing philosophical simulator, Everything.
The reflective, eleven-minute trailer honors the game's title by highlighting the interconnected nature of the whole universe. Narrated by the renowned British philosopher Alan Watts, the video uses game footage to show life in all its strange and wonderful forms. Thanks to its length and intriguing theme, this trailer of Everything won the Jury Prize at the Vienna Shorts Festival, which earned it direct qualification to the Academy Awards, set to take place on March 4, 2018. Interestingly, this is not the first time the game's developer, David OReilly, has been involved with cinema. Using his experience in games and incorporating it into film, OReilly served as animation director on Her by Spike Jonze, handling the sequences where characters are playing video games.

For those curious about the game, in Everything you can take control of everything you see on screen, from an atom to a traffic cone, and interact with other objects, creating unique behaviors. When the player takes a form for the first time, that object is added to an encyclopedia cataloged by type. The goal of the game is to complete this encyclopedia and occupy the form of all available objects.
