The fifth installment of the Fatal Frame series will make its way to the West before the end of the year. To build anticipation, here are twenty minutes of gameplay from Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, which will take you to exorcise ghosts in the Mount Hikami area.
A Western release after E3 2015
After the Nintendo E3 2015 conference, the company's Treehouse event revealed that the fifth installment of the Fatal Frame series, also known as Project Zero, will come to the West. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water was originally released in Japan on September 27, 2014, earning a good reception from the community.
The story introduces us to Yuuri Kozukata, a young woman capable of seeing the “shadow” of the objects she touches, who answers a girl’s plea for help to find a person who has disappeared in the Mount Hikami area, a place that harbors the malicious spirit of the shrine maiden.
Gameplay: the GamePad as a real camera
During the Treehouse event, a twenty-minute video showed the gameplay of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. As in previous games in the series, the player must defeat hostile ghosts by taking photographs of them. Here, the Wii U GamePad is used as a real camera and can damage enemies by rotating the controller before taking a shot. The game takes place in a large open environment with mountains, lakes, and cemeteries. The mountain setting is constantly rainy, making it harder to use the camera viewfinder to spot the ghosts roaming the area.
Ayane joins the mission
As a curious detail, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water features the presence of the ninja Ayane (from Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden) in a special mission where she has to rescue a young woman who is lost. Unlike Yuuri, Ayane cannot defeat ghosts, and her strategy is based on evasion.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is being developed by Koei Tecmo and will be available exclusively on Wii U. The game does not have a concrete release date, but it is expected to arrive before the end of 2015.
