A Mask That Adds a Sense of Smell
Video games and movies are set to reach a new level with virtual reality, thanks to the revolutionary FeelReal mask, which will allow you to experience the smells and sensations of the virtual world.
FeelReal is a fully operational prototype of a mask that lets you experience the smells and sensations of a movie or video game in virtual reality. The mask is designed to immerse you completely in the virtual world, letting you experience present smells and sensations such as wind, heat, humidity, rain, and vibrations. Mounted easily on the user's face, the mask covers the mouth and nose without touching the skin and adapts perfectly to whatever virtual reality device you are wearing.
The FeelReal mask connects via Bluetooth and lasts four hours with a built-in rechargeable battery. Inside the mask is the scent generator, which has seven interchangeable cartridges including aromas such as jungle, ocean, fire, herbs, dust, flowers, and metal. To simulate fresh and warm wind as well as humidity, the device features two powerful micro-fans and a humidifier. It also has a vibration system and a microphone, allowing the user to connect and interact with other users around the world.
Compatibility and Availability
The mask was presented at the Game Developers Conference 2015, where several members of the public had the opportunity to try it, generating good feedback. FeelReal will be compatible with Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Sony Morpheus, and Zeiss VR One. The project leaders plan to launch a campaign at the end of March to raise funds via Kickstarter, presumably for mass production. In the meantime, masks can already be pre-ordered on the official site for $250.
