With the commercial retirement of arcade machines, we lost many things, and one of the most significant was the chance to duel with complete strangers who wanted to wipe the floor with us. Today, that interaction has moved online, but many arcade classics never received the proper treatment. The Fightcade platform lets us measure our skills against players from around the world in titles like King of Fighters and other SNK crossovers, or join forces in cooperative games like Metal Slug.
The Nintendo Switch may be relatively weak in terms of hardware, but the advantage of playing with others almost anywhere puts it in a different league. In some ways, it managed to recreate part of the magic we found in arcades. We were the best in the world at our favorite game until that person who gave us a beating appeared, forcing us to train for a couple of weeks straight…
Why deny it? Some games are far more enjoyable with a human opponent or partner. Think of all the fighting franchises: Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, the crossovers with Capcom and Marvel. How to Play King of Fighters Online with Fightcade
The first step is to create an account on the official Fightcade page. Nothing too fancy here: a username, a password, and an email address suffice. Then you'll need to download the client for your operating system, whether Windows, Linux, or Mac OS. The program doesn't have a formal installer and runs directly from a temporary folder. The interface looks like a hybrid between MAME and an IRC client. On the left, you'll find the game list; in the center, the most relevant service data; and on the right, the connected players.
Fightcade supports dozens of games… but you must download them yourself. On the official page, we find a complete list of compatible titles, along with the reference to use when searching on Google (e.g., 'kof97' for King of Fighters '97). All ROM images must be copied to the 'ROMs' folder inside Fightcade, and you'll need to specify the path in the client using the 'Locate ROM folders' option. Another critical element for Fightcade to work correctly is a copy of the NeoGeo BIOS.
The rest is… finding a rival or an ally in your game. The /help command presents all available options, including how to send, accept, and reject challenges. If you want to play solo, no worries: the /play command opens the game without issues. Naturally, fighting games are the most popular on Fightcade, but the story doesn't end with King of Fighters.
