A Gamescom development demo of Final Fantasy VII Revelation reportedly let players pilot the Highwind between islands and explore on the ground after parachuting down. The third and final game in the remake trilogy is designed to let players explore the planet via the airship, while the demo account offers a glimpse of how that journey can work.

The demo put the Highwind between islands

The party began aboard the Highwind, with Wutai set as the story destination. Players could explore other regions before heading there, according to the demo account. That makes the airship more than a way to travel between story beats: in the demo, it opened up a choice of where to go first.

From flight to explorable ground

Development-build footage shows Highwind flight and a parachute descent during the Gamescom demo.

The demo included parachute descents into areas players could explore on foot. Access to locations was restricted, so the observed landings were not a promise that every part of the world could be reached this way.

The Highwind also serves as a party base

In the Gamescom demo, the airship was also a base where the party could gather. Players could interact with companions and prepare between outings.

A separate development demo at PAX West reportedly offered another way back after landing: the map’s quick-travel option let players choose to enter the Highwind or go straight to piloting it.

Exploration beyond the novelty of flight

The preview’s assessment was that optional activities will need to hold players’ interest beyond the initial novelty of flying. That is an impression of the demo, not a verdict on the complete game.

The confirmed PS5 release date
