"Set your phaser to delicious" is the tagline of Food Replicator, a unique gem on Tumblr, a place for space gourmands to "replicate" the most delicious (and terrifying) dishes from Star Trek. "Eat your way through every recipe in the Star Trek universe! Learn the recipes and experience the final frontier of cooking." Klingon aberrations, Bajoran delicacies, and Ferengi grossness, among many other things, including alcoholic drinks.
The Replicator in Star Trek
Replicators, those devices capable of producing anything from pure energy, are fundamental not only to Star Trek's narrative, but also to its philosophy. Their ability to reconstitute matter was a key factor in creating the utopian society the series is founded on, ending - among other things - hunger and inequality on Earth.
In the series, we see them create all kinds of objects out of nothing, a narrative wildcard that always got the crew out of a jam. But above all, we saw them replicate food: from the favorite tea of my much-admired Jean-Luc Picard to the most repulsive Klingon recipes. If you're a trekkie at heart, like yours truly, you've probably wondered what, say, the Klingon stew of Bok-Rat liver would taste like. Well, you no longer have to wonder, because Food Replicator attempts, from the pages of Tumblr, to adapt each of these delicacies to 21st-century Earth cuisine, including many of the characters' favorite cocktails. And all without the taste of synthehol!
Take, for example, one of the most repulsive Klingon dishes: the blood pie. For its preparation, the blog's author uses pork blood and fat, onions and cream, among other things.
