Interested in creating your first FPS? Learning to code would be a solid step in the right direction, but if you want a more visual approach, the web offers several tools, including FPS Creator. A few weeks ago, its developers decided to make FPS Creator open source, so not only will you have access to its code, but you can also download a copy for free, with a serial number included.

FPS Creator: The FPS Game Maker Is Now Open Source

Creating games is an idea that we, as hardcore gamers (at least most of us), have always considered. The highest barrier remains the code (not so much for its difficulty, but for the time and dedication it demands), but over the years several tools have emerged that, despite their limitations, serve as a great introduction. The classic mechanism of these tools is to offer a free edition, and if the user decides they need more resources, they only have to purchase the Pro or Premium editions that the company offers. A viable alternative is for the potential creator to shape their own content and integrate it into their preferred platform, and that's where FPS Creator comes in.

Why Open Source?

If we look closely at the videos and demos of games made with FPS Creator, it's clear that its resources are on par with those titles we played endlessly in the '90s, but honestly there's nothing wrong with that. Why invest time and money when FPS Creator delivers a 3D visual editor and more than 800 ready-to-use objects? The integration part comes mainly thanks to the decision of its creators, the company The Game Creators, to turn FPS Creator into an open source application. Its code is available on GitHub, along with dozens of model packs and other elements.

Fortunately, the novice user doesn't have to worry about details like compilation. The GitHub page itself has links to its main binary, and a universal serial number to activate all its functions. I imagine that with this decision The Game Creators seeks to "encapsulate" FPS Creator to continue with more advanced development, but the amount of information available about this editor is enormous (after all, it has been with us for more than a decade), and it would be crazy to waste that.
