Free Programs for 3D Printers (Part 2)

In the first part of the “Free programs for 3D printers”, several environments were left out. For this reason, we have decided to recommend another five platforms so that you not only learn about more services, but also understand the role of each program in the 3D printing process. We will introduce you to code slicing utilities, 3D modeling tools, a host for your printer, and a powerful printer manager.

Slic3r

We will start with Slic3r, an open source slicing program that adds advanced features you won't find in other platforms. The utility offers you a three-dimensional fill pattern in the shape of a honeycomb:

• It creates structural 3D shapes useful inside the print.
• Direct integration with Octoprint, to print them with a single click.

Slic3r is a free program available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

SliceCrafter

SliceCrafter is a web-based slicing program. From its interface you can load, paste, or drag web links and STL files to slice them. You can also easily prepare the G-code for printing (using IceSL options). SliceCrafter is a free development by the creators of IceSL.

IceSL

If we mention SliceCrafter, we also have to talk about IceSL, a powerful 3D slicing and modeling tool. From its interface you can edit the model from command sequences (Lua language). Although this method is a bit complex, it allows you to do parametric modeling while visualizing changes in real time. On the right side of its interface you will find preset settings to cut quickly and easily (ideal for beginners). The most important thing about the environment is the possibility to customize the print.

Octoprint

Octoprint is a web-based 3D printer host that allows you to have complete control over the printer and print jobs. The most important thing about the program is that you can monitor the printing remotely via a Wi-Fi device like Raspberry Pi (it accepts G-code “gCodeVisualizer”). The platform also accepts the insertion of components to expand its capabilities.

Repetier

Repetier is without a doubt the oldest program on this list for 3D printers, and it allows you to control the 3D printer and slicing of STL files. The platform offers support for up to 16 extruders (FDM technology). You can also access Repetier remotely and control the 3D printer from any device.
