Just as the market today overuses words like gamer and metaverse, in the in the '90s all computers were 'multimedia' for one simple reason: they had a CD-ROM drive. 30 years later, optical discs aren't even useful as decoration stuck on a wall or hanging from a string, and PC cases no longer come with 5.25-inch bays. It's still relatively easy to find blank discs and external burners, but demand is minimal.

Now, suppose you have a stack of unburned CD-ROMs. Getting rid of them might be tempting, but user 'Arduinocelentano' has another idea: experimenting with them and burning images onto their surface. When I say burning, I don't mean conventional data, but engraving like you see on a piece of metal or a glass object. The most impressive part is that it doesn't need any strange hardware—a standard CD-RW burner is more than enough.

The technique isn't exactly new. Instructables user 'Argon' posted a very similar proof of concept 15 years ago, but Arduinocelentano's work is much more friendly and accessible. The only special requirement is a Linux environment to compile and run his CDImage tool, which generates a fake audio track. That track is what reproduces the pattern on the disc's surface, and once created, you can use any burning software to dump its "content" to a CD (always as audio, otherwise it won't work).

The rest is a matter of calibrating the parameters of the CD-ROM you're going to burn. CDImage comes with four presets for Verbatim, eProformance, and TDK rewritable discs, but given the millions of generic discs still in circulation, anyone interested will have to experiment with these values, or bet that one of the presets is compatible enough. Another thing Arduinocelentano recommends is using high-contrast images to optimize the final pattern.
