Losing a savegame is especially painful for anyone who has spent hours unlocking achievements and other perks. Some platforms handle automatic cloud backups, but for the rest of your titles, you'll need to make manual backups yourself. That's where Game Backup Monitor comes to the rescue, a simple tool for monitoring, saving, and compressing savegame backups.
One of the most common problems with new game releases is losing progress due to corrupt savegames. I still remember the early months of Skyrim, which forced us to save half a dozen games plus the quick save, quickly instilling a sense of paranoia.
If I remember correctly, No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 suffered similar incidents, but we can also lose savegames due to a storage drive failure or a sudden power loss. In other words, backing up the savegames of your favorite games is an excellent practice, and for that, there is Game Backup Monitor.
How to back up savegames with Game Backup Monitor
If we look closely at the Game Backup Monitor manual, the first impression is that it's a very complex program, but don't be fooled. Basically, the process comes down to specifying the destination for the backups and detecting installed games. In general, Game Backup Monitor does a good job of detection on its own, but you can add titles manually if they don't appear at first.
Each game gets its own subfolder, and the savegames are compressed in 7zip format to take up less space (you can adjust the compression level in the settings). Game Backup Monitor doesn't save anything to the cloud on its own, but that gives us the ability to transfer savegames manually to whichever service we want, instead of relying on Steam or another platform.
The most important aspect of Game Backup Monitor is that it can track our sessions and create automatic backups once we finish playing. Its options menu includes parameters to ignore short sessions (say, less than five or ten minutes), and we can also use it as a launcher.
Game Backup Monitor is a free, portable, open-source application, compatible with Windows, or Linux using Mono. To conclude, we should mention a small detail: the program's development has concluded, and from this point on it will enter a maintenance phase with bug fixes. Download a copy!
