How to play Magocracy

To play Magocracy online, wait for preparation to finish, then press Play to start the MS-DOS edition (2004) in your browser. This is a text adventure: explore by entering commands and interact through its text interface.

Your goal is to survive a deadly contest for the throne. You enter a castle as an inexperienced mage, surrounded by stronger rivals who move and act independently. Explore, scavenge for objects, uncover secrets, and improve your stats; use spells, weapons, and armor to take on opponents. Reading their spellbooks can teach you their abilities. Choose your approach carefully: fight openly, exploit the castle’s secrets, or try to avoid the contest.

A competition entry with a distinctive format

A. Joseph Rheaume wrote the game using TADS 2. The DOS edition appeared in the 2004 Interactive Fiction Competition and placed 18th among 36 entries. Its text-driven exploration is paired with rivals pursuing their own actions, giving this survival-focused adventure an unusual, MUD-like feel.
